Fish Welfare Africa is a young organisation. Rather than overstate early results, we're publishing our roadmap — what we've built, what's next, and how we'll know it's working.
How research becomes lasting change
Our theory of change connects four stages — each one feeding the next.
Evidence
We generate rigorous, locally-grounded research on the welfare of farmed and wild-caught fish, starting with cage aquaculture on Lake Victoria.
Engagement
We work directly with farmers and communities to translate evidence into practical, low-cost welfare improvements that also support productivity.
Influence
We bring evidence and on-the-ground experience into policy conversations, building the case for fish welfare within Kenya's animal welfare and fisheries frameworks.
Scale
We use what we learn in Kenya to build partnerships and programming across Africa, positioning FWA as the continent's centre of excellence for fish welfare.

Where We Are
2024 – 2025- Established Fish Welfare Africa as a registered Kenyan non-profit
- Built a founding team with veterinary, aquaculture, and animal welfare expertise
- Scoped a research study on cage farming welfare in the Lake Victoria Basin
- Began early engagement with fish farmers and sector stakeholders in Kenya
Our First Projects
2025 – 2026- Complete and publish our first fish welfare scoping study
- Pilot farmer engagement programmes on water quality and handling practices
- Develop a practical, field-ready fish welfare assessment tool
- Formalise partnerships with Kenyan research institutions and universities
Where We're Going
2026 – 2028- Expand research to additional production systems and species
- Support the development of fish welfare policy guidance in Kenya
- Grow farmer networks and welfare training across major aquaculture regions
- Extend partnerships and programming into new African markets
We'll report honestly, even when the news is that we're still building
Funders and partners deserve a clear-eyed view of where a young organisation actually stands. We'd rather earn trust slowly and keep it, than promise more than we can show.
